Satan’s Alley
The best part of the Tropic Thunder movie is the fake trailer for a movie called Satan’s Alley starring Robert Downey, Jr.’s character, Kirk Lazarus. I like RBJ as an actor and I thought he did really well in Ironman. At first, despite all the hype, I wasn’t exactly sold on Ironman when I saw the trailer and even later when I saw the movie in the cinemas. It was only when I rewatched it on DVD that I realized it took a lot of talent for RBJ to pull off a great superhero movie. And since then, I’ve officially become an RBJ fan. I say officially because I’ve always thought he was a good actor, but haven’t seen much of him in movies (mostly he had supporting roles). I was very happily surprised when he showed up at the end of The Hulk (sadly, it was the part I enjoyed the most in the whole movie).
I wasn’t really expecting much with Tropic Thunder because I’m not a big fan of Ben Stiller’s movies and Ben Stiller, but when I knew RBJ was in it, I just had to watch it. Besides, the premise of the movie seemed interesting and I’m a curious person. After the fake trailers in the beginning of the movie, my expectations went up a notch, but I really shouldn’t have bothered. It seems the last trailer was the highlight of the whole movie, apart from the little kid getting thrown and the appearance of Tom Cruise’s name in the credits (seriously, I didn’t even know he was in the movie until the end…I just kept on scratching my head wondering why so much attention was given to that rude, bald man). But I do have to point out that the good stuff in the movie is hidden by little things that might not be very noticeable. You just have to keep an eye out for these things to truly appreciate the movie (funny details in the background, subtle references and of course, the many cameos). Naturally, RBJ takes the spotlight but I also think that Jay Baruchel (Kevin) and his character contributed nicely to the movie, although he’s a little underrated. That said, overall, Tropic Thunder is a fairly good comedy. I don’t feel that I have wasted my minutes. So, anyway, here’s my Brokeback-inspired favorite part (courtesy of YouTube):
If you didn’t find that funny, I don’t know which planet you’re from. And the Tobey Maguire match is just incredibly perfect (Winner of the MTV Movie Award Best Kiss). Ahhh…Ironman and Spider-man, who would have thought?
I’m just wondering, too, if this is gonna be made into a real movie? A lot of people want this movie made and I’ve found several websites saying this movie will be released in 2009 plus this official-looking Flash site. Although I love the trailer, I’m not sure I would like a full feature film. I just think it would ruin the whole idea of the trailer. It’s great just the way it is.
