Love
When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body [...] For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.
- Dr. Iannis from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
I have found the definition of love I have been searching for. I think this hits closer to the truth than what is usually depicted and fantasized (on TV, in books, in movies…) This has always been my perception of love and I’m glad some people at least think the same. This kind of love is simply beautiful.
And no, I haven’t watched Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, although I just watched The New World (which led to this). I haven’t watched Disney’s Pocahontas 2, either, so I didn’t know how this story would turn out. I just can’t express how much I loved the ending. Maybe I’m just biased ’cause I’ve been waiting for Christian Bale’s character to come in all through the first parts of the movie. And when he finally did (as John Rolfe)…well, goodbye, Smith, hello, Rolfe. I never really liked John Smith (or Colin Farrel), anyway. But, no, really. With the Bale bias aside, I think it was time we took a break from the typical Hollywood romantic ending which I am so fucking sick and tired of. (I’m sorry. I just had to say that word. That’s how sick and tired I am of it.) I’m just not the typical romantic. I will happily ruin every mainstream movie couple. Spidey and Mary Jane? I root for Harry. Will and Elizabeth? Jack Sparrow. Batman and Rachel? I’ll take the Joker. See what I mean?
